Foods to avoid
Avoid foods and drinks that are high in fats, sugars and/or salt. These foods provide little nourishment and can make healthier foods less appealing. Examples include sweet biscuits, salty snacks, chocolate, lollies, cakes and slices, chips, fruit juice, cordials and soft drink.
Avoid small, round, hard or slippery foods as they can cause choking. These include whole nuts and seeds, whole grapes, cherry tomatoes and blueberries, uncooked hard vegetables, cocktail frankfurts, popcorn and hard candy. To reduce the risk, chop grapes and cherry tomatoes in quarters, flatten blueberries, cook hard vegetables and use nut / seed butters.
Avoid honey and any food containing raw egg. These foods may contain harmful bacteria.
Avoid caffeinated drinks such as tea, coffee and sports and energy drinks.
Reduced fat milk is not recommended for children under 2. Avoid unpasteurised cow milk for babies and young children. Unpasteurised milk may have harmful bacteria that can affect young children more than adults.
